The main reason would have to be the fact that wood shake shingles are extremely flammable, because of this insurance companies do not like to provide affordable policies any longer.  shake shingles also rely on the felt to keep the water out of your home, and if a leak occurs it can be very expensive to locate and fix the problem. making the switch to asphalt can save you lots of money on your insurance policy. 

To make the switch from shake to asphalt, you must remove the shake shingles and felt, then re-deck the roof before installing your selected shingles.  this is a task requiring excellent workmanship and attention to details.
